Dui Hua will attend the first Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the United States, to be convened by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on November 5, 2010. The Foundation will be represented by Program Officer Tobias Smith. Dui Hua is able to attend the sessions due to its Special Consultative Status granted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
In preparation for the US UPR, Dui Hua submitted recommendations in April that focused on the American parole system, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention, and use of the death penalty. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights included details from Dui Hua’s submission in a summary of stakeholder recommendations.
The United States also released its own national report in advance of the UPR.
In February 2009, Senior Manager Joshua Rosenzweig attended China’s first UPR following Dui Hua’s submission of recommendations for China. Learn more about submissions and reports related to China’s UPR.
Established by the UN General Assembly in 2006, UPR is a process that all 192 UN Member States are required to go through every four years. It allows a country to present information on its human rights record, discuss its work to fulfill international human rights commitments, and respond to concerns raised by other countries and UPR stakeholders.
